In a startling development for the Italian online betting industry, January witnessed a substantial decline in gross gaming revenue (GGR), with a -51.2% drop compared to the same month last year, as reported by Agimeg. The GGR, which stood at euro 180.8 million in January last year, plummeted to just euro 88.2 million this year.
Bucking the trend, the industry saw an uptick in turnover, which rose from euro 1.22 billion in January 2023 to euro 1.4 billion this January, registering a 13.5% increase.
Lottomatica emerged as the market leader, experiencing a notable 16.2% growth in its market share of GGR. Following closely were Sisal and Snaitech, which also saw their market shares increase by 6.3% and 9.8%, respectively.
However, not all operators fared well. Pokerstars and 888 faced significant setbacks, with their market shares plummeting by 37.2% and 27.9%, respectively. Bet365 also experienced a decline, with a 6.3% drop in its market share.
Excellent performance – Agimeg reports – for Planetwin365, Betaland, Scommettendo, Replatz, Admiral Sport, and Unibet bucked the trend, recording impressive gains. Planetwin365’s market share surged by 18.3%, Betaland by 8.3%, Scommettendo by a remarkable 61.4%, Replatz by 4.9%, Admiral Sport by 15.8%, and Unibet by 14.3%.

Betting shops: drop of the GGR in January
The Italian betting shop market mirrored the online sector’s downturn in January, with a notable -62% fall in GGR compared to the same period last year. Last January – Agimeg reports – the GGR on betting shops stood at euro 113.9 million, but this year, it plummeted to just euro 43.3 million.
Lottomatica retained its position as the market leader, commanding a significant 33.5% market share. Following closely were Snaitech and Eurobet, holding 18.3% and 16.5% of the market, respectively.
